Report from the Accreditation and Syllabus Subcommittee: Update

May 2013

The European Training Syllabus in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes was first prepared in November 1995 and submitted to CESP –Confederation of European Specialities in Paediatrics - at the Annual Meeting in Graz 1996. Subsequent revisions have taken place in January 1997, March 1998 and June 1998. The First Major Revision was done in September 2001.Peter Hindmarsh was the Chairman of the ESPE Working Group on European Training with members Martin Savage (UK), Jesus Argente (Spain), Sergio Bernasconi (Italy), Jean-Pierre Bourguignon (Belgium), Paul Czernichow (France), Catherine Dacou-Voutetakis (Greece), Annette Grueters-Kieslich (Germany), Martin Ritzen (Sweden) and Johan Joseph Waelkens (Netherlands). Several members worked further in the revisions including Sten Drop, Lars Sävendahl and Chris Kelnar. The last revision was made in 2005. At the European Academy of Paediatrics (EAP), subsection of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS; formerly CESP), each paediatric subspecialty is represented by a liaison officer within the Tertiary Care Working Group (TCWG). EAP has its own legislation/constitution (Belgian/EU law) representing the central unifying platform for paediatric training in Europe.

The Accreditation and Syllabus Subcommittee, founded in 2011 under the umbrella of the ETC (Education and Training Committee, Chair Jan Lebl), was expanded by inclusion of new members including Stefan Riedl, Feyza Darendeliler, Peter Hindmarsh, Chris Kelnar, Sten Drop and Jeremy Allgrove. George Chrousos joined the group in 2012.

The first aim of the subcommitte was to update the existing training syllabus and work on plans and actions for accreditation of paediatric endocrine centres in Europe. After contacting several colleagues from several European countries and receiving feedback from questionnaires, a small group of the Accreditation and Syllabus Subcommittee, including Feyza Darendeliler, Sten Drop, Stefano Cianfarani, Wilma Oostdijk, Giorgio Radetti, Stefan Riedl, Jan Lebl, and Lars Sävendahl have worked on updating the training syllabus in Paediatric Endocrinology based on the recommendations of the EAP and the European Board of Paediatrics (EBP), with the aim to present it to the larger group and ESPE Council.

Here we present the last updated version of the training syllabus. Please send your feedback to
