ESPE publishes new statement urging EU policy makers to phase out endocrine disrupting chemicals in children’s toys
The Council, consisting of the EU Member States, European Parliament and European Commission are in the final stages of discussing a new EU Toy Safety Regulation. These ‘trilogue’ negotiations started on the 20th of November and are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. This file is a leftover from the previous legislative term of the European Parliament.
One of the main elements of the legislation is the restriction of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) which continues to be frequently present in toys endangering the growth and overall health and wellbeing of children and young adults.
Following up on previous efforts, ESPE published the following statement to urge those involved in the trilogue to consider children’s health and phase out all EDCs from children’s toys. As outlined in the statement, toys remain a key source of EDC exposure for children with 25% containing harmful chemicals.
