Speakers:

Dr Kashyap Patel
Prof Kash Patel is a Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow and Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology. Prof. Kash Patel focuses on furthering the understanding of the genetic basis of diabetes and applying these discoveries to improve patient care. His research in monogenic diabetes involves impactful studies spanning from gene discovery to clinical implementation. The genes Prof. Patel’s team identified are now part of standard global testing protocols. Beyond gene discovery, he helped establish the utility of an innovative genetic testing approach that combines type 1 diabetes risk scoring and monogenic gene testing, now used in NHS clinics. His research led to testing strategy changes to improve diagnosis in consanguineous populations and determine optimal testing for Europeans, helping reduce misdiagnosis rates. He is recipient of two Wellcome Fellowship and the recipient of prestigious Young Investigator awards from Diabetes UK and EASD-SGGD for his work in monogenic diabetes.

Professor Tim Barrett
Prof Tim Barrett is professor of paediatrics at University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK, and an honorary consultant in paediatric endocrinology and diabetes at Birmingham Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

He leads an international clinical trial in a rare diabetes syndrome (Wolfram), and set up national specialist MDT services for 3 rare diabetes syndromes. His research interests are in common and rare diabetes. He is an NIHR Senior Investigator.
