Often growth failure is part of a complex condition, which can be very rare or even unique, with the child having many other signs and symptoms. The paediatric endocrinologists’ experience and skills are key to selecting the tests and procedures that will advance diagnosis and help the child. Technology, genetics and clinical skills are increasing the number of children receiving a differential diagnosis, rather than the diagnosis of exclusion, namely, idiopathic short stature. This series of medical education activities aims to explore issues with diagnosing children with growth disorders and discuss some of the technical advances that can enhance diagnosis, including when they should be employed. Advice on which tests to use will be discussed, especially in light of the continuing development, wider availability and affordability of genetic testing.
Learning of the career path and life journey of an eminent clinician offers inspiration and insight for those less advanced in their careers. Professor Wieland Kiess, a legend and successful leader in paediatric endocrinology will be interviewed as part of this learning journey, to offer advice based on his long and successful career and broad publication history.
