Report on the 33rd Summer School held in Burg Feistritz am Wechsel, Austria, from Monday 16th to Wednesday 18th September 2019:

The 33rd ESPE Summer School was held at Burg Feistritz am Wechsel in Austria from September 16th to 18th prior to the annual ESPE meeting in Vienna. Since its inception in 1987 the ESPE Summer School has been supported by Ferring Pharmaceuticals who provided financial support for the School which was greatly appreciated. Burg Feistritz had already hosted the 4th Summer school in 1990 (photo) coordinated by Pierre Sizonenko.

The Steering Committee had developed the programme around 4 themes focusing on Pituitary disorders, Insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes, Autoimmune endocrine diseases and Differences of sex development (DSD) and gender dysphoria. The four themes were delivered via a combination of state of the art lectures and controversial case reports.

An important feature of the Summer School was the presentation of cases by each fellow that were initially discussed in small groups facilitated by a faculty member before being delivered to the whole group. These cases covered an extensive range of challenging endocrine topics leading to active discussion and interaction between the fellows and faculty.

This year, there were 26 delegates from 13 countries and 3 continents. The faculty consisted of Mehul Dattani, Sandro Loche, Wieland Kiess, Fida  Bacha, Olle Kämpe, Eystein Husebye  and Martine Cools, the Summer School Steering Committee (Carla Bizzarri, Gary Butler, Cheri Deal, Raja Padidela and Ram Weiss) and the local organiser Stefan Riedl. Social activities consisted of an alp walk, a lesson on how to bake apple strudel and other typical Austrian cakes, a tour of the castle, and an evening chamber music concert in the castle’s concert hall by the local organiser and his group.

The ESPE Summer School for 2020 will be held between September 7th to 9th prior to the annual ESPE meeting in Liverpool.

Student feedback: It was one of the best educational meetings I have ever attended. So worth it!

Probably I am inspired enough to continue for next 20 years (like Wieland) and will be able to proudly call myself a “survivor”.  It was an honor to meet everyone and I learned every moment. Overall the structure, topics and arrangements are hard to beat.

Hosts were gracious, helpful and always smiling. Mentors were encouraging and extremely knowledgeable. Lastly I would like to thank ESPE, the owner of the castle (I apologize as I forgot her name) and amazing Stefan.
