Professor Dominique Maiter
Dominique Maiter (MD, PhD) is Professor Emeritus of Endocrinology at the Université catholique de Louvain, Brussels, and former Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Nutrition (2012-2022) at the Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc, Brussels, Belgium. His major clinical and research interests include diagnosis and management of pituitary tumours and states of pituitary hormone deficits and excess.
With a H-index of 58, Professor Maiter has contributed more than 235 publications in peer-reviewed journals and published 30 chapter books or reviews. Former president of the Belgian Endocrine Society, he is also a member of several international endocrine societies, including The Endocrine Society, USA, The European Society of Endocrinology, The European Neuroendocrine Association, and The Pituitary Society.
Johan De Graaf
Before accepting that I was a pituitary patient I worked at a large international bank in several functions in the field of auditing, controlling and financial management accounting. I was given the opportunity to get socially engaged by the bank and I joined the Dutch Pituitary Foundation in 2012. In 2015 I became chair of this organisation and during this time we saw an increase of 60% in the number of members. During the past few years I’ve done a number of courses and studies to gain knowledge useful in the field of patient advocacy, like the European Patients’ Academy on Therapeutic Innovation (Eupati) and the Eurordis’ Open Academy School on Medicines Research & Development, the Open Academy School on Scientific Innovation & Translational Research and Leadership school.
In 2017 I joined Endo-ERN, the European Reference Network on Rare Endocrine Conditions in which I’m active as steering committee member of the main thematic group Pituitary and several Work Packages. Besides my activities within Endo-ERN I’m involved in the endocrine registry project EuRRECa. Endo-ERN provided me with the opportunity to do research on the patient’s unmet needs and quality of life. This had led to a number of scientific publications.
Since 2019 I’m accessing proposals for scientific research within the scientific evaluation committee of the EJP-RD project (European Joint Program Rare Diseases) and since 2020 I’m a member of the patient expert board of the Dutch Brain Foundation. This board assess proposals regarding scientific brain research on the patient perspective and provides the Brain Foundation with solicitated and unsolicited advice. Since December 2022 I’m involved in the HTA Taskforce of Eurordis and as from January 2023 I am be one of the three co-chairs of the Patient Advocate Board of the European Endocrine Society.
Professor Márta Korbonits
Márta Korbonits, MD, PhD, DSc, FRCP is Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, is a graduate from the Semmelweis Medical School, Budapest.
She was a Medical Research Council Clinician Scientist Fellow working on ghrelin and the hormonal regulation of the metabolic enzyme AMP-activated protein kinase and her latest study in the field showed the beneficial effects of AMPK stimulator metformin on glucocorticoid treated patients. She also works on endocrine tumorigenesis, especially the genetic origin of pituitary adenomas and other endocrine tumour syndromes. She studies both the clinical characterisation as well as molecular aspects of pituitary diseases and leads a large international consortium to study the genetic background of endocrine tumours.
She led the development of the first guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric pituitary adenomas. She published over 230 original papers (H-index 89 at Google Scholar). She shares her time between clinical patient care, clinical research and laboratory-based research as well as teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level and is Deputy Editor of Endocrine-Related Cancer.
She is the Director of the HARP Clinical Doctoral Training Programme. She is an elected Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. She is recipient of several national and international awards, including the 2022 Rolf Gaillard prize of the European Society for Neuroendocrinology and the 2023 Gerald D. Aurbach Award for Outstanding Translational Research of the Endocrine Society. She is President of the Society for Endocrinology (2022-2026).
