Dear colleagues: It is with great pleasure that I invite all of you to come to New York for the 8th Joint Meeting, 9–12 September 2009. The meeting will bring together LWPES and ESPE as well as our sister societies APES, APPEG, JSPE and SLEP and continues a 25-year-old tradition of cooperation. Our theme will be “Global Care in Paediatric Endocrinology” and the format of our meeting will be truly global. We expect over 2000 delegates in the newly refurbished Hilton New York in mid-town Manhattan. The hotel has over 1900 rooms and 150 000 sq. ft. of function space and will make for an attractive venue. While the Hilton New York will be the headquarters hotel, the 1750 room Sheraton New York Hotel and the 665 room Sheraton Manhattan Hotel are only one block away and will also serve as conference hotels. With its central location, the congress venue is just a short walk away from all the excitement of New York. Information on the hotels is now available at the congress website. The meeting will begin with the “Clubs” in the morning on Wednesday 9 September, and we will launch the core meeting in the afternoon. We will have six plenary sessions, three yearbook sessions as well as interactive and pro/con sessions. There will be 19 themed symposia and 26 Meet-the-Expert sessions. We expect 1500 posters and will schedule 15 platform sessions. We will have many satellite sessions on growth and diabetes throughout the three days. The preliminary programme is now available at the congress website. We have booked the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) on 54th Street, around the corner from the Hilton New York, for our Gala evening on Thursday 10 September. Founded in 1929, MoMA’s collection includes around 150 000 paintings, sculptures, drawings, photographs and other works of contemporary art from the nineteenth century to the present. The Friday evening has been left free so that delegates can experience the sights of this vibrant city. The abstract submission site is now open at http://www.call4abstracts.com/lwpes and participants are encouraged to submit their abstracts for a poster or platform presentation. The deadline is 10 April 2009 and authors will be notified by 10 June 2009. Congress registration and housing websites are now open. Register before 7 August to take advantage of the earlybird discount! My email address is PHSaenger@aol.com. Cheryl Gallagher is the Meeting Manager. Please consult her if you have questions regarding the meeting, travel and hotel accommodation enquiries. She can be reached via telephone at 856-380-6812 or via email at cgallagher@ahint.com. I hope to welcome all of you in September in New York. Sincerely, Paul Saenger, MD, President, Organising Committe

12–15 September 2009 Briarcliff Manor, New York, USA Sponsored by educational grants from Ferring Pharmaceuticals A/S and TEVA This year’s ESPE Summer School will be held close to New York in a quiet environment to promote interactions between participants. The aims of the ESPE summer school are to provide up to date basic and clinical teaching in selected areas of paediatric endocrinology, to promote discussions and interactions between younger and more senior paediatric endocrinologists and to encourage young paediatric endocrinologists to pursue an academic track. The target audience is composed of physicians in academic training in paediatric endocrinology, aged 40 years or less. The course extends over 3 days and is composed of lectures, discussions and interactive case presentations. Although the registration deadline for the 2009 Summer School has now passed, make a note in your diary to apply for next year’s. For information on future training courses visit http://www.eurospe.org/education/. Message from the Turner Syndrome Working Group Dear colleagues, We wish you a happy and productive new year! The ESPE Turner Syndrome (TS) working group has initiated a project of data recording on “long-term outcome of subjects with TS older than 15 yrs”. It is anticipated that such data, derived from a large number of patients, will disclose any possible pitfalls in our current management and consequently will prove very useful in further planning of long term follow-up of individuals with TS. Obviously, the success of this effort will depend on a massive participation of clinicians caring for TS girls. Specific efforts should be made (especially by paediatric endocrinologists) in localising older persons with TS. Physicians interested in taking part in this very important effort can obtain information from the TS working group coordinator, Catherine Dacou-Voutetakis, at adacou@med.uoa.gr. For more information on the TS working group, visit the ESPE website: http://www.eurospe.org/about/workinggroups/Turners.html. Thank you in advance for your co-operation. Warmest regards, Catherine Dacou-Voutetakis Turner Syndrome working group coordinator Deadlines Please note these fast approaching deadline dates and submit your applications as soon as possible. We opened our Training Centre in Nairobi in May 2008 with eight fellows from Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania, tutored by a rotating ESPE member. After 6 months in the centre, they went home to open their paediatric endocrine clinics and do their research projects. They will be back in May 2009 for a 3-month period of crystallisation. In November, we started the second group, with fellows from Nigeria, Sudan, Kenya and Tanzania. ESPE has been represented by a group of devoted tutors, who spent a month in the centre, and each one of them had an unforgettable experience. Some of their reports and further information on the PanAfrican Fellowhip Programme can be found on our website at http://www.eurospe.org/education/ education_developingcountries.html. We have a list of ten volunteers for 2009 and two for 2010. Anyone who wishes to spend a month in the centre is welcome to email me at z_hochberg@rambam.health.gov.il. The centre covers travel, health insurance and accommodation, and ESPE provides a €500 honorarium. Don’t miss the opportunity! Ze'ev Hochberg, Israel Coordinator, ESPE Africa Programme
The 48th Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Endocrinology
(ESPE 2010) will be held in Prague, Czech Republic, on 22–25 Sepetember 2010.
Our host city is the seat of the oldest university in Central Europe, founded by
King Charles IV in 1348. The Czech Republic is also known for being the birthplace
of scientists and physicians who have contributed greatly to the achievements of
medicine, including Gregor Mendel, Jan E Purkinje and Sigmund Freud.
The theme of the meeting will be “Bridging Clinical Care and Basic Research”.
The plenary lectures, symposia, meet-the-experts and interactive sessions aim to
bring new data from the basic sciences to the clinician, as well as to stimulate
discussion of topics needing future research both at the bench and in the clinics. We hope that
you will appreciate this new symposia format and look forward to your feedback.
The Prague meeting will also reflect the globalisation of our specialty, and aim to promote further
collaboration among the sister societies through joint symposia. These symposia will provide a
unique occasion to share medical experience from around the world, and help to elucidate the role
of genetic heritage and different systems of health care delivery on disease phenotype and outcome.
The glass-walled Prague congress centre will give you a panoramic view of the city while
attending the exhibitions, poster sessions and coffee breaks. However, we hope that you will
also find the time to stroll along the streets, lanes and riversides of medieval Prague, to
appreciate its rich history and architecture, as well as its specialty shops and restaurants.
We look forward to seeing you at the 48th Annual ESPE Meeting in Prague!
JAN LEBL, President ESPE 2010
