Dear friends and colleagues, In mid-January, Prague was suddenly covered by half a metre of snow, bringing a very rare opportunity to experience cross-country skiing even inside the city. The little squares, narrow streets and backyards of Prague were turned into a snowy fairy tale, looking calm and sleepy. However, even during this apparently quiet season of the year the preparations for the 49th Annual ESPE meeting in Prague (22–25 September 2010) are persistently proceeding apace. Meeting programme All plenary speakers and a vast majority of symposium speakers have already confirmed their participation. To follow the current status of the meeting programme please visit our website at www.espe2010.org. The theme of the 2010 ESPE Annual Meeting will be “Bridging Clinical Care and Basic Research”, allowing translation of recent discoveries into daily paediatric endocrine praxis to benefit our patients. The theme will be reflected in a new format of meeting Symposia based on three case reports, each displaying the role of a single gene mutation in the disease pathogenesis and clinical presentation. These Symposia will include topics linked to β-cells, adrenals, thyroid and the ovaries. Submission of abstracts Abstract submission is open at the website (www.espe2010.org). Please note the abstract submission deadline of 10 March 2010. This is also the deadline for applications for ESPE travel grants. Social Programme The official social programme of the meeting will include a welcome reception at the congress venue and the annual ESPE Evening in a prominent location at one of the river islands of Prague, just facing the panorama of the Prague castle. Please do not forget to register for the ESPE dinner in advance as the number of seats will be limited. For those who intend to enjoy both science and the abundant cultural offerings of Prague theatres and concert halls, here is just a handful of web links so that you can plan your own programme and purchase tickets in advance: • www.narodni-divadlo.cz displays programmes of the National Theatre opera house and of the Estates Theatre. You may know of the Estates Theatre as the only still operating theatre building worldwide where Mozart himself conducted his opera performances, including the first performance of Don Giovanni on 29 October 1787 • www.opera.cz offers the programme of the third opera house, the Prague State Opera • www.ceskafilharmonie.cz is the official website of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra and www.strunypodzimu.cz of the annual music festival “Strings of Autumn” It will be our great pleasure to welcome you in Prague at the 49th ESPE Annual Meeting! Dear friends and colleagues, It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 50th ESPE Meeting in Glasgow in 2011. To mark this important stage in the development of our Society, the theme will relate to ‘Evidence-based Paediatric Endocrinology – its strengths and limitations’. This will give the opportunity to look back at what we know scientifically, and how we know it, to showcase current research, and to look to the future as ESPE becomes an increasingly international forum for the exchange of high quality basic scientific and clinical information. My colleagues and I look forward to welcoming you to Glasgow, a vibrant and stylish former European City of Culture, with some of the best shopping in the UK, and gateway to some of the finest unspoilt countryside in Europe, as well as Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital. You can be assured of warm Scottish hospitality and an outstanding scientific programme in the UK’s best conference centre. Welcome to Scotland!
